To get your business’ online and your digital marketing setup, there are six steps you need to take. These six steps include a couple of obvious steps, however they also include some items that are missed or half done by a large number of small business marketers. They don’t take long to complete and should be performed before you spend one ounce of energy or a single dollar on marketing.
Step 1: Visual Brand Elements
Make sure your businesses visual brand elements are created and ready for you to use online. You’ll need the following elements to complete this step and several of the remaining steps:
- company logo
- font stack (the fonts you want to use – check out Google Fonts if your wondering how to get great fonts in your website)
- color scheme
- brand related images
Step 2: Website Setup
Without a doubt the biggest portion in your digital marketing setup, is your website. You want to make sure your website is setup and ready to start receiving traffic. This means having your domains purchased and directing visitors to your hosting account (where your website will live).
As part of step two you’ll also want to make sure that the structure of certain meta information is in place. This will get your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts underway. What I’m referring to here is making sure your website outputs page titles the right way, and meta descriptions outputting page summaries. There is a bunch to good SEO setup, so I’ll leave that to another post or podcast session.
Step 3: Google Setup
It’s no surprise that Google, as the leading search provider, has developed services that are now required as part of your online presence.There are four main services you’ll want to setup and these are a Google account, Google Business entry, Google Anlaytics, and Google Search Console.
These services combine to allow you to see who’s visiting your website and what they’re doing once they’re there. As well as monitor your websites organic search status. Which means how Google see’s your website and your websites content.
Step 4: Social Media Setup
It’s no longer acceptable to act like social media doesn’t exist. If you’re online and marketing your business, you need to setup your social media channels. No matter what industry or type of business you are, set it up!
Deciding on which social channels to setup requires some strategy and planning. However, it’s safe to say that you should at least setup the following channels at a bare minimum. That’s not to say that some business should setup others at this point, however this is a list of must haves for all businesses. Even if you don’t intend to use them all right away get them setup.
- Facebook Company Page
- Twitter Account
- LinkedIn Company Page
- Google+ Business Page
Step 5: Email Marketing Tool Setup
Email marketing is by far the most effective form on online marketing. From an ROI and personal approach point of view. Therefore, you should begin building your email list
as soon as possible.
To do this there are a number of tactical approaches to start building, however in order to collect email addresses and build your list you’ll need to select an email program or service and integrate it into your website. You could use a spreadsheet, but with any luck you’ll get more subscriptions than you can handle in a simple spreadsheet.
Step 6: Monitoring and Reporting Setup
Now that you’re all setup with a website, Google services, Social Media, and email marketing you need to make sure you’re keeping an eye on how they are performing.
We’ve already setup your Google Analytics account and ensured it’s working. This service alone will provide you with great insight into how people are using your website.
So for monitoring and reporting the only thing you need to setup to get yourself started is Google Analytics and scheduling a weekly report or manual review in your calendar.
